What is Galaxy Note 5 lock screen?

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen is a special page that protects Galaxy Note 5 from unintended operations.

For example, when Galaxy Note 5 is sitting in your pocket, the touch screen may be accidentally turned on. Without Galaxy Note 5  lock screen (or screen lock), some apps may be started and you may accidentally dial some contacts.

If you set some security instead of the default swipe to unlock for the Galaxy Note 5 lock screen. Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen can also protect your phone from unauthorized access.

Galaxy Note 5 lock screen can also display some important info so that you can get the info without unlocking the phone.

By default, without unlocking the phone, Galaxy Note 5 lock screen allows you :

  • to check time/data;
  • to check weather info;
  • to use camera (but you cannot edit photos);
  • to make emergent calls to contacts in ICE group;
  • to preview notifications if enabled (you can disable this if privacy is a concern)

If you need access other features or other apps, you need unlock Galaxy Note 5.

How to access, lock and unlock Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen

By default, you can lock Galaxy Note 5 lock screen in a few ways:

  1. You can press the Galaxy Note 5 Power button to turn off the screen and lock the phone immediately.
  2. If Galaxy Note 5  is not used for a specified period (screen timeout which can be set in Settings—Display—Timeout),  Galaxy Note 5 will turn off the  screen automatically and will lock Galaxy Note 5 later after another specified period (set under Settings—Lock screen —lock automatically).

When Galaxy Note 5  is locked, you will get the Galaxy Note 5 lock screen whenever the screen is on.  You can turn on the Galaxy Note 5 touch screen in different ways:

  • You can press the Power button.
  • You can press the Home button.
  • When you receive a new notification, Galaxy Note 5 screen will be turned on shortly.
  • When you receive a call, Galaxy Note 5 screen will be turned on automatically.
  • When you receive an alarm alert, Galaxy Note 5 screen will also be turned on for a while.
  • When you receive an event reminder, Galaxy Note 5 will turn on the screen automatically for a while.

After the screen is turned on, you are in Galaxy Note 5 lock screen.

You can then unlock Galaxy Note 5 lock screen based on lock screen security settings.

By default, you can swipe in any direction (if swipe is set as lock screen security) as shown below to unlock Galaxy Note 5.

Please note, if you have any sensitive data on the phone, you should change the lock screen security settings (read on).

Galaxy_Note_5_lock_screen_1_swipe_to_unlock

Why you should set Galaxy Note 5 lock screen security?

The default Galaxy Note 5 lock screen security is swipe to unlock.  You can swipe the screen as instructed to unlock Galaxy Note 5 as shown above.

This can be a serious security issue.

Anyone who holds your phone can access all your personal data and files. This can be a nightmare if you lose your Galaxy Note 5.

So, if you have any sensitive or private data or files on Galaxy Note 5 (who don’t have any?), you should set lock screen security so that your data and files can be protected.

Please also note, security is to everyone, including you. If you forget your PIN/password, you may also get yourself in trouble (read on).

How to set Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen security?

You can set Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen security in Settings— Lock screen and security — Screen lock type, and then select a screen lock method mentioned below.

After Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen security (lock type) is set,  you must use the lock type (pattern, PIN, password, fingerprint) you specified to unlock your Galaxy Note 5.

Some lock types may accept alternative methods.  You may also use smart lock (read on).

You can choose from the following lock types for Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen security.

1. Pattern

Draw a pattern by connecting four dots or more, and then draw the pattern again to verify it.

Set a backup PIN to unlock the screen when you forget the pattern.

2. PIN

A PIN consists of numbers only.

Enter at least four numbers, and then enter the PIN again to verify it.

3. Password

A password consists of characters and numbers.

Enter at least four characters including numbers and symbols, and then enter the password again to verify it.

4. Fingerprint

Register your fingerprints to unlock the screen. The fingerprint sensor is located in the Home button which is located below the screen. Please check this page for Galaxy Note 5 layout.

You need register your fingerprint first. When registering fingerprint, you will be asked to setup an alternative password (or backup password).

Write down the backup password and remember it.

How to use smart lock for Samsung Galaxy S6 lock screen

Android Lollipop smart lock is fully supported in Samsung Galaxy Note 5.  You can unlock Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen with:

  • trusted devices, e.g., a Bluetooth device or a NFC device.
  • trusted locations, e.g., home, or office.
  • trusted voice.
  • On-body detection.

Please read this guide on how to use smart lock for Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen.

What can I do if I forget Samsung Galaxy Note 5 lock screen pattern, PIN, password, or fingerprints are not recognized?

Lock screen security is to everyone. You are not an exception.

If you forget the PIN, password, backup password (and fingerprint is not recognized), you are locked out of your own Galaxy Note 5.

This happens everyday to some Galaxy Note 5 owners.

Calling technical support or visiting Service center will unlikely solve the problem due to legal reasons, although you can prove you are the owner.

Remember personal data are involved. No legitimate service providers are willing to take the risk.

But don’t be panic.

You have at least 2 methods to unlock Galaxy Note 5 lock screen by yourself  if you forget the pattern/PIN/password/backup password.

  1. Use Samsung’s Find My mobile service.  This requires that you enabled the service on the phone before you are locked out.
  2. Use your main Google account. The main Google account means the first Google account added to Galaxy Note 5.

Please note, both methods require active internet connection.

This means at least one of WiFi and mobile data is enabled on the phone before you are locked out of Galaxy Note 5.  You cannot enable them when you are locked out of the phone.

Please read this guide for detailed steps. It was written for S6. But it works on Galaxy Note 5 equally.

Yes, you can. In settings – lock screen – contact info, you can add your contact info on the lock screen.

I have the Note 5 … I have Google and I did the android device manager find and lock … now it appears that I still have my forgotten pin and the Google pin I entered maybe after that … I always use my thumb print and my battery died, now it wants the pin I don’t know … I did not set up the Samsung account on this phone … I really can’t loose my data on it … does ANYTHING work????

Unfortunately, Google device manager can only lock the phone if the phone is unlocked. But if the phone is locked, android device manager will not overwrite it. You still have to use the original PIN/password/pattern.

You should back up your data regularly if they are important.

Anyway, there are no official ways to unlock the phone without Samsung account. You probably have to reset the phone.

Very likely, the phone is already unlocked when you press the home button. You can test it without fingerprint unlocking.

I recently received a Note 5. Great device! BUT,….today I was locked out of my phone for an hour. I have a pretty active job so it no doubt was bumped around in my pocket. I suspect the device went into a security mode from the home button being pushed a few times in my pocket. Is there any way to turn off or limit the unauthorized access features? Thanks.

Note5 v6.0.1. New phone, day 3. How to unlock/use phone after timeout?
Each time after timeout the screen doesn’t respond (screen appears for a blink when pressed the home or power button but doesn’t stay or able to swipe/unlock). Disabled the screen lock/pin n lengthen the timeout settings, it didn’t solve it. Also restarted each time it happens. This can’t be the way. Please help. TIA.

I have a password set up but always use the fingerprint. My note 5 did a software update and restarted and requires me to enter my password first. My password is letters and numbers. I am able to type in numbers but can’t figure out how to enter letters. Does anyone know how I can bring up the keyboard or enter the letters with the numbers?

if you lock screen type is password, the keyboard should include letters.

If the keyboard only has numbers, it means your lock screen is PIN, not password.

After updating to Marshmallow, backup password is no longer used. During the update, it should ask you to set lock screen to pattern/PIN/password if you want to continue to use fingerprint. If you ignore it, the screen lock security will be reset as swipe. You cannot use fingerprint after a reboot, or after being inactive for more than 24 hours. Please read this guide on the changes in using fingerprint in Marshmallow.

Hi everyone, right before I got a replacement note 5 I was able to create a swipe pattern to unlock my note 5. I was using my signature as if I would write with my finger tip. Or think of it this way, with the S PEN I would swipe my signature to unlock the screen. Don’t remember how I was able to set that up.. any ideas?

There are many signature unlocker in Play store.

Be careful with such unlocking methods.Personally, I would not recommend any.

thank you for sharing the update.

After the Marshmallow update, if you used fingerprint to unlock the phone before the update, you will be asked to set up a PIN/pattern/password to continue to use fingerprint. Otherwise, it will default to swipe.

Themes should not affect screen lock. Did you check lock screen security settings?

Then how can you wake up the phone? Remember many Android phones don’t have Home button or S Pen.

And “ALL” phones must respond to power key at any time unless battery is running out.

So, as I know, you probably cannot find such a phone in the market up to now (2016).

Why do I have to swipe to unlock to get to my PIN? Before I updated my phone it just asked for my PIN and there was not swipe to unlock. How do I bypass the swipe to unlock feature and get back to my PIN only? This feature is very annoying because it is obvious that I am trying to unlock my phone. Help please

Galaxy Note 5 always works like that. Actually since Lollipop (and some KitKat), you need swipe to enter a new page to enter password/PIN.

if you find it is tedious, you can use fingerprint.

The official Samsung covers (those with front cover) have this feature. You can wake up the screen once the cover is open, or lock the screen once it’s covered.

I would not recommend gesture based methods although there are some apps for them. These apps usually drain battery excessively because they must be always on.

Normally, you should not worry about the buttons. They should be safe to use for a few years. You also have two buttons to wake up the screen. Using home button will wake up the phone, together with fingerprint, is the most efficient way to wake up and unlock the phone.

My fingerprint is recognized however when I try to unlock it with my password it is not right. I’d like to change my password so that if my fingerprint doesn’t work I have the backup password to use. It doesn’t sound like that’s possible once I have a backup password and I forget it that’s it unless I reset the whole phone.

When you registered your fingerprints first time, your note 5 asked you to set up a backup password for fingerprints. This backup password can be used when fingerprint is not recognised. You can modify this backup password at settings – lock screen and security – fingerprint.

If you want to use fingerprint to unlock the phone you need change lock screen security to fingerprint.

What’s you lock screen security setting?

first, you can change lock screen security to anything else.

To change the backup password for fingerprints, your fingerprints must be recognized, or, you remember the old backup password. Otherwise, you have to reset the phone.

If fingerprint is used to unlock the screen, you use fingerprint or backup password, not PIN.

Turn off power saving will make it longer.

This is to save battery because the screen may be turned on accidentally a few times in your pocket.

You can always use the backup password to unlock the screen. When you setup fingerprint, your Note 5 required you to setup a backup password. You cannot use fingerprint before the backup password is setup properly.

Another way to unlock your phone is using your Samsung account at Samsung’s Find My Mobile site. But this requires internet connection on the phone.

The camera shortcut actually cannot be removed unless the phone is rooted.

Did you try use quick launch (tap home button twice) when screen is locked? does it work?

You can try to reboot the phone, and/or clear cache partition to see whether they help.

Not sure what padlock you are referring to.

By default, your Note 5 should be locked instantly after pressing power button. If not, check Settings–lock screen and security –secure lock settings, then enable “Lock instantly with power key”.

          Do you mean t unlock?

Smart lock allows you to unlock the phone without typing password or using fingerprints. When the screen is off, you should be still on lock screen. But you can swipe to unlock, instead of using fingerprints or password. This is to avoid accidental tappingv to the phone.

Also, if your phone is setup by your IT department, they may disable these settings if they want.

Did you encrypt the phone? If you have to provide password when rebooting the phone, it usually means it’s encrypted. In this case , the two options will also be grayed out.

You can try to clear credentials in settings – lock screen and security – other security settings.
