Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9

Samsung unveiled Galaxy Note 9, the 8th generation of Galaxy Note devices, on August 9 (press release).  You will be able to get one in retail stores on August 24.

As the latest generation of Galaxy Note devices, you should expect some new features of Galaxy Note 9 in this phablet.

This guide will explore the top nine new features of Galaxy Note 9 (compared to Galaxy Note 8) to help you understand the differences and enhancements in Galaxy Note 9.

You may check and download the official Samsung Galaxy Note 9 user manual in your local language to try these features.

#1. Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9: Bluetooth-enabled S Pen

S Pen is one of the signature accessories for all Galaxy Note devices although a few Samsung tablets (e.g., Galaxy Tab S4 and Tab A) started to get S Pen bundled.

But S Pen in Galaxy Note 9 got a significant update: the S Pen is now Bluetooth enabled.

In addition to all existing S Pen features, you can now use the S Pen as a remote control for Galaxy  Note 9: a remote shutter for Galaxy Note 9 camera, a remote control of media player, a presenter for your presentation with Galaxy Note 9, a remote launcher of some apps. You may check this guide on how to use S Pen remote control on Galaxy Note 9.

You do not need to worry about the battery life and charging the battery in the new S Pen. You put the S Pen in the S Pen slot in Galaxy Note 9 for 1 minute; the S Pen will be ready for use up to 30 minutes.

The secret lies on the supercapacitor, not a regular battery, which powers the S Pen. The lifespan of a supercapacitor is also far longer than a standard lithium battery, and therefore you should never need to replace the supercapacitor even if you use Galaxy Note 9 for the next 10 years.

Please check this page on how to use and charge the new Galaxy Note 9 S Pen.

#2. Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9: better, although not ideal,  location for the fingerprint sensor

The fingerprint sensor in Galaxy Note 8 (and S8 as well) is located in the worst possible spot on the back of the phone. Many owners accidentally smudge the camera lens when they want to use the fingerprint to unlock the phone.

In Galaxy S9 (and S9+), Samsung corrected the issue. The fingerprint sensor is placed below the camera lens.  It is OK for Galaxy S9. But for S9+, the two rear cameras are placed vertically and therefore for some owners the location is too low.

Now Galaxy Note 9 places the two rear cameras horizontally and places the fingerprint sensor below the camera lens. The fingerprint sensor location is undoubtedly way better than that in Galaxy Note 8 and S9+.

If Samsung enlarged the gap between the camera sensors and the fingerprint sensor, it would have been better.

#3. Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9: Samsung DeX Cable

Samsung DeX is one of the most practical innovations for using smartphones on a big screen.

With the original Samsung Dex station and the newer DeX pad, you can turn Galaxy phones with USB C port into an Android PC.

Now, with Galaxy Note 9, you do not need the DeX station or DeX pad, you can use Samsung DeX with just a DeX cable (which is similar to a normal USB-C to HDMI cable).

You can hook up Galaxy Note 9 to a monitor or a TV with an HDMI input. You only need to carry a DeX cable.

#4. Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9:  128 GB base storage

The base model of Galaxy Note 9 comes with 128GB storage. If this is still not enough, there is another model with 512GB storage.

Galaxy Note 9 is the first Galaxy phones offering 512GB internal storage.  You can top up the storage to 1TB with a 512GB micro SD card.

#5. Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9: 4000mAh battery

Samsung had been aggressive in putting a larger battery in Galaxy phones until the 3500mAh battery powered Galaxy Note 7 exploded.

Using the last 2 years to sort out manufacturing issues and improve quality check procedures, Samsung came back with a larger battery for Galaxy Note 9.

The 4000mAh battery in Galaxy Note 9  is massive for a smartphone in 2018. As a comparison, the similarly sized Galaxy Note 8 has only a 3300mAh battery.

#6. Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9: Dual-aperture rear camera

The dual-aperture camera was first introduced in Galaxy S9 and S9+. Now, Galaxy Note 9 also comes with the dual-aperture rear camera.

Galaxy Note 9 automatically switches between two apertures (f/1,5 and f/2.4) based on the detected lighting conditions.

In Pro mode, you can manually switch between these two apertures as explained in this guide. In other camera modes, it will always be done automatically.

#7. Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9:  intelligent camera

Although Galaxy Note 9 camera hardware is almost identical to that of Galaxy S9 and S9+, some artificial intelligence (AI) features were embedded in the Galaxy Note 9 camera app.

Galaxy Note 9 camera can recognize scenes and detect subjects.  Then it optimizes and enhances the photo automatically.

Besides, Galaxy  Note 9 rear camera can detect possible flaws, for example, blinks, blurs, smudges, and backlighting,  and then notify you, You can retake the photo.

#8. Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9: faster CPU

Similar to Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy Note 9 use two different CPUs depending on the market: Snapdragon  CPUs in North American and a few other markets, and Samsung Exynos chips in international markets.

Samsung upgraded the CPUs in Galaxy Note 9 to the latest model: Snapdragon 845 and Exynos 9810. They are faster and more power efficient, at least on paper, than last year’s Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895.

FYI,  Galaxy S9 or S9+ also use the identical CPUs.

#9. Top 9 new features of Galaxy Note 9: More RAM

Galaxy Note 9 comes with two RAM (memory) configurations: 6GB for the 128GB base model, and 8GB for the 512GB model.

So, the base model has the same amount of RAM  as in Galaxy Note. But the 512GB model gets 8GB, which is the maximum RAM supported by Snapdragon 845.

The larger RAM will boost the performance for multitasking and gaming.

Of course, there are some other new features in Galaxy Note 9:  slightly larger screen, higher (on paper) mobile data connection speed, faster iris scanning, colour-matching (with S Pen colour) screen-off memo, more S Pen features, improved Bixby …
