ICS 4.0.4 update for Galaxy Note is arriving, globally

After 2 months of the initial ICS update(4.0.3) for Galaxy Note, Samsung now quietly roll out ICS 4.0.4 globally. I was a bit surprised when I saw the update notification, because I just got the information the 4.0.4 update would be roll out gradually.

Apparently, immediately after releasing the ICS update for AT&T’s version Galaxy Note on July 11, Samsung also pushed out the ICS 4.0.4 update for Galaxy Note users in German. And today, more regions including most European countries and Asian countries get the Android ICS 4.0.4 update for Galaxy Note.

Hopefully, this update will solve some of the battery issues most users experienced in GB and ICS 4.0.3.

Now, all Galaxy Note users are expecting the next major update for Jelly Bean (Android 4.1). The information we have is that Galaxy Note  and S3 will get the Jelly Bean update, probably in Q1 2013.

Also, the coming Galaxy Note 2 (with ICS pre-installed, not Jelly Bean) will be very likely announced in the IFA 2012 (August 31-Sept. 5) and start to shipping in November (roughly one year after the release date for Galaxy Note) . So, hopefully, in the Q1 of 2013, both Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 2 will get the Jelly Bean (4.1) update.

Anyway,today’s minor update (from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4)  is about 100MB.  So, please try to download through WiFi or Kies if your mobile data is very limited.

  • Hi, I got an update for my note1. While trying to update it, I got an error saying that 'Failed to update firmware due to network or server problem. Try later or try using PC Kies'.

    Kindly help me to get rid of this.

  • I'm facing a huge problem while updating the apps.
    It's juz going on showing downloading but nothing is been getting downloaded.
    I'm facing this only while updating not while downloading a new app.
    Please help me

    • It can be caused by the network. Play store is a bit picky now (easily drop connections). But anyway, you can just leave it and it should eventually finish the update.

      Or, you can try to manually update one by one.

      • I have updated my galaxy note with andriod version 4.1.2.
        After the update the mobile is not working smoother.
        The games keep on strucking.
        Even the mobile has become soo slow.
        Please suggest me something. Please.

      • When i change my network mode frim gsm to wcdma the packet data(Internet) is getting inactive. Then after restarting the device the same problem is continued.
        The packet data(Internet) is getting active only when i change the network mode gsm and resatart the device again.

  • when JB update will available in India? You told me earlier, Jb will be available in January. but why samsung not releasing yet?

    • The Jelly Bean 4.1 update for the original Galaxy Note was initially scheduled in Q4/2012-Q1/2013.

      Apparently, due to the security flaw in all Samsung’s Exynos 4 chip reported in last December, the updater will be delayed one or two months. Hopefully, Samsung will start to roll out the update this quarter through a new Premium Suite. We reported this in a G+ post on December 21 (https://plus.google.com/u/0/115449601279434257667/posts )

    • It is not necessary to be panic. This is probably just another normal security flaw (file permissions) discovered. Microsoft receives hundreds of such reports (usually far more critical) everyday: Apple receives handful such reports everyday.

      If it is critical, Samsung will issue a hot-fix through OTA/Kies, I believe.

      Usually, such threats are exaggerated. It is a possible security hole, but most app developers (who do not have low-level programming knowledge) don't even know how to utilize such flaws. Of course, some malicious developers may distribute such nasty apps. The recommendation is to get apps from reputable developers.

  • i just bought galaxy note gt n7000 pink color 1 month ago here in qatar and its 4.0.3 why until now its not yet update to 4.0.4 i try also using kies by computer and it says this is the latest firm ware pda:lpd/phone:lpt/csc:lp7(mid). but yesterday i bought again another galaxy note gt n700 white color 4.0.3 and after i open the phone its update to 4.0.4 via wifi why my pink note is not update plz help thanx

    • MID does not have ICS 4.0.4 update. The latest update for it is iCS 4.0.3.

      I guess the white one may have a different CSC code.

        • Probably, the local distributor/carrier do not want the ICS 4.0.4 update. Sometimes, they do not have enough resources to do the local testing and therefore skip some updates.

          Yes, you may still get the Jelly Bean update in Q1/2012. But it also depends on the local distributor/carrier. Most of the time, they want to sell a Jelly Bean product rather than an ICS one.

  • Hi Dear, I am facing a problem in my new galaxy note. I open default camera application and take a photo and after that I view the photo from right lower side of camera application and when I back to camera option its show warning, camera failed and application closed. Please help me.

  • i succesfully updated my android version to 4.04 of nearly 110mb
    n aftr tat it is again showing a update of 85 mb

    • You'd better apply it, as the second update for ICS 4.0.4 is for improving stability and performance.

  • Hi dude. I have purchased Galaxy Note. Its awesome. Battery backup is near about 1 day for medium use. I think this is ok for android phone. A small update is available for India. This is mainly performance update and N Note now available in N7000. Can you please tell me when JB update will roll out in India?

    • No, the restarting issues is very uncommon.

      For NFC, it is an optional configuration. So, in most regions, Galaxy Note does NOT have NFC.

    • with the launch of Note 2, in most regions. the price of the original Note drops considerably. so, it is good value for your money.

      The phone is excelloent (arguable) if you porefer a large and decent screen. Most (of course, not ALL) of the problems were fixed in ICS 4.0.4 update

    • What do you mean network locked? As I know all Singapore models are not network locked. If you updated it through Kies or OTA, it should change the network settings.

      • When I bought it it was not locked...after the Ota update to 4.0.4 it is saying that I need a network lock control key...

        • That is complicated. You may have to pay some fees ($10-$20) to get it the code from some third parties. Some handphone shops may have such service. Samsung service center can also do this, but it can be expensive. Also, Samsung does not have international warranty, your local Samsung service center may charge you even more.

          Please do NOT try any code if you are not sure.

    • For Indonesia (CSC: XSE), the latest version should be 4.0.4.

      OTA probably is not available in your country, so you have to use Kies. You may try to tr-install Kies, and update it.

      Sometimes, a reboot of your Note will solve some connection issues.

  • I'm in Jeddah, KSA. But till now I can't upgrade to ICS 4.0.4.
    I already tried using KIES on toolls --> firmware upgrade and initializing but it said, N7000 does not support initializing.
    Please help me...

    • the latest version for KSA is ICS 4.0.3. No ICS 4.0.4 update for your Note yet. You may get Jelly bean (4.1) directly.

      for the error, you may try to uninstall Kies, then install the latest version.

      • Yes, as I know. Actually, in most regions the unbranded one get the update first.

        But in a few regions, the distributor may choose not to update.

    • Actually, Tele2, Vipnet, and T-Mobile Galaxy Note models in Croatia all received ICS 4.0.4 update. The only left is the unbranded model (TRA). Possibly, the local vendor/distributor is not interested in the update. It is also possible, you will directly get Jelly Bean update in the first batch.

        • it means the official 4.0.4 update has not been released for your model.

          You may flash other region's rom, but this will void your warranty and in extreme cases, it may make your note unusable.

    • For Egyptian model of Galaxy Note (CSC code: EGY), the latest version is still ICS 4.0.3. It can arrive at any time because the update should be finished, but yet released. Now Samsung is focusing on Jelly Bean (ICS 4.1) for Galaxy Note.

    • India and several other region also received this update. As this is an UI feature update and is not linked to Android version update, it is hard to track. But it should be available in all regions gradually.

  • I Have The 4.0.4 update and It SUCKS. It has made My phone sooo slow, My phone was Great before The update came. I Never wanted The update But It became do persistent That i had to do It. There are some new features i Like But My phe Is.so glitchy and slow That they don't even matter. Im ready to Just smash my phone,because of this update

    • Did you try factory data reset after the update? In a few regions, it seems factory data reset is needed after the ICS 4.0.4 update.

  • After upgrading to ICS 4..0.4, the photo editor has some issue. After selecting for copying to another image, the copy does not work. Is it only my problem or has anyone experieced this too?

  • today i just got ics 4.0.3 .. i checked for update it says it has 4.0.4 so i updated it to it .. then after finishing downloading it froze and started saying "unfortunately, application installer have stopped " and i don't know what to do i tried "kies" it gave me no options about the frimware and i tried to reset factory sitting .. still the same HELP !!

    • Try to update Kies on your PC (help--check for update). Then connect your note to the PC. In Kies (on your PC), go to Tools--firmware upgrade and initialization.

      Please be patient during the update. Sometimes, it may take quite long time.

  • I tried two OTA updates and locked the capability to update this way for 24 hours. I downloaded Kies and given the message under "firmware" ..."Your device does not support software upgrade via Kies"

    Any idea why this would show up or is it due to me failing at the OTA update?

    • Its the ATT locked version of the Note. The device was rooted previously with a version of ICS but reset all settings/data today.

      • Yes, this could be one of the possible reasons.

        The message itself indicates your current firmware does not match the CSC, or some files prevents the update.

        You best call AT&T or Samsung service center, they can reset/update for you.

  • Good day,i already updated my galaxy note to ics 4.0.4 but when i want to watch movie online,thru my note there are no media player.can you help me to fixed this. By the way im from qatar.

    • for online videos, you do not need a player. For example, for youtube, you cna use youtube app. Others, you may just use browser.

      to play local videos, you can use the Video Player in your app drawer.You can also download some other video players from Google play store.

    • You need update your Kies on the PC first (help--check for updates).
      Then, connect your Note to the PC with the USB cable. If no update show up automatically, you can try Tools--firmware upgrade and initialization.

      You may also check the CSC code, which may be different from your freind's if you bought it from a different vendor.

  • Samsung is slow in releasing android OS upgrade, and is even slower in releasing the needed user manuals. Samsung's web site in US continued to show only the original Feb 2012 version of Galaxy Note user manual throughout the May ICS 4.0.3 upgrade and July 4.0.4 upgrade. Finally, Samsung web site released on 9/10/2012 a new user manual that is back dated to 7/13/2012 (apparently the 4.0.4 date). The new user manual has 273 pages (much bigger than the 223 pages of the original version). The printed user manual is available on ebay for those who want a physical book at hand.

  • Hello , Ive heard the new update is rolling out for GNote and its rolled OTA at Germany with new UI like S3,Performance improvements and New Gallery.
    Why Samsung always starts their updates with Germany ? And when will the update roll out to India ?
    And When can i expect Jellybean for my Note ??

    • The second ICS 4.0.4 update is trying to solve stability issues. I am not aware of the S3 like update.

      Jelly Bean (4.1) update for Galaxy Note will be available in Q4/12-Q1/13. Very likely, a few weeks after the shipment of Galaxy Note 2.

      Probably, Samsung has some active partners in Germany to help them test the update. For other models, Germany may get update quite late.

  • Hello, I have Galaxy Note, and i upgraded it to ICS 4.04, after that i am facing lots of issue with my phone...like having lots of problem while charging the phone. phone gets restarted unforcefully. Some times phones goes to car mode automatically....there are lots of battery issue with the phone...cloud you please suggest what can be done...or how can i downgrade to ICS 4.03 or 4.0..

    • In most regions, actually, ICS 4.0.4 update fix most problems in ICS 4.0.3.

      You may try to reset your phone, as the problem can be caused by some legacy settings. You can go to Settings--Back up and reset--Factory data reset. Please back your data before resetting.

      Downgrade is not a good choice.

  • i have updated my galaxy note from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 from the internet through odin everything works fine with me but cant install arabic language, alsa i wanna ask u if i want to download the normal ics 4.0.4 when it is available in my regioin what shall i do , thanks in advance for ur help :)

    • Not sure, as I am not sure about the CSC code of Galaxy Note for your country. You can always check the update on your PC using the Kies.

  • Hey!!.

    My phone keeps rebooting itself randomly after i updated it to ICS 4.03. I hear it could be a hardware or a software related issue. I hope that the new software update can fix this.

    However, i really need to to know what happens if the phone reboots/restarts itself while the phone is undergoing a software update?

    Any suggestions, for any fix if it so happens coz now that the update is available I would really like to update the phone.

    • You should apply the new update. The ICS 4.0.4 update solved a lot of issues encountered in the ICS 4.0.3 update.

      Random rebooting can also be caused by some poor-written or malicious apps, in addtion to hardware/firmware issue. Occasionally, some widgets may also cause the issue.

      During the update, the phone must reboot at least once. If, for some reasons, the update is not successful, you can always re-apply the update.

    • Yes. The battery issues in Galaxy Note was fixed in the ICS 4.0.4 update. In Some regions, users already got two ICS 4.0.4 update. The first one addressed many issues in ICS 4.0.3 update, including the battery issue. The second one improves the stability and improve the performance noticeably.

    • after facing a lot of trouble on installing the update but , (al7amdo lelah ) i had 4.0.4 successfully installed.. my phone become more powerfully very smooth touch . cool pop in the media player ....cool signature security lock.... but i mist the green call on the left of the contact at my logs
      but general really cool update .....

      we hope from Samsung to fix the EMMC eraser problem
      and i hope again the 4.1.1 update to be available soon on galaxy note

        eMMC issue is not an issue if you are using the official rom and kernel.

  • I was trying to update my note thru Kies from Qatar. it says "your note doesn't support intializing"....what does it mean? please explain.

    • If you rooted your phone, or flashed any unofficial rom, you may not be able to update through Kies.

      You may try to update the Kies on yoru PC first (help--check for upset), then check "usb debugging" on your Note. After this, connect your Note to the PC with the USB cable and try to update in Kies.

    • galaxy note dose not support the type of update ..... all what you have to do is connect your phone the kise and pop window will appear to show you that you have update available...
      more detail about your phone will help us to help you

    • OTA or Kies are the two official ways to update. Normally Kies should not fail.

      If Kies fails, you need note down when it fails (at what stage). If it is due to network issues, you can try at different time.,

      If convenient, you can visit local Samsung service center to ask them to do the update.

  • Hi, i dont have internet connection in the office. Can i update to ICS 4.0.4 via mobile internet (data package) from the same mobile which i am going to update?

        • Very likely, it is due to the unstable mobile networ.

          For Kies, you can:
          1). download Kies from Samsung website: http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP
          2). Install it on your PC.
          3). Start the installed Samsung Kies (Start--All Programs--Samsung--Kies--Samsung Kies
          4). check for update for Kies itself (Help--check for update). Update the Kies if needed.
          5). connect your Galaxy Note to the PC using the USB cable provided by Samsung
          6). Usually it will pop up update info for you. If not, in Kies, go to Tools--Firmware upgrade and initialization
          7). follow the on-screen instruction to finish the update.

  • i have problem after download firmware 4.0.4
    process install just 15% and then... i have information from GNote " failed upgrade data. try with kies or go to service centre... "

    • You can backup your data, and perform a factory reset.

      After resetting, you can try the update again.

      If OTA fails, you can try PC Kies. First, make sure your Kies is the latest version. (help–check for updates). Then, you may try Tools–Firmware upgrade and initialization , or even Tools–Emergency firmware recovery.

    PROBLEM :
    I had format my galaxy note after updating it to android 4.03
    After formatting my galaxy, many of the application cannot be disabled and when disabling them and reboot the phone, they begin starting again like maps and voice search
    also after formatting my phone, there are some problems like delay in the animation ( slow animation ) when opening or switching between application,

    so what i have to do ???
    ( i already formatted it using three different methods but the performance is the same ( slow animation ) )

    please help me

    • For the animation one, you set it through Settings--Developer options, you can set Window animation scale and transition animation scale to "off" or 1x" or "0.5x"

      Some apps cannot be disabled unless you root the phone. Voice search can be disabled. Once it is disabled (you should force stop first), it should not start.

      Anyway, it is NOT necessary to format the storage. Most times, the factory data reset is enough.

  • does the 4.0.4 update for galaxy note made any ui improvements as the s3 effects i mean ????
    when moving between pages and home screen ,etc.

    • ICS 4.0.4 for the Middle East is stilt not available (current is 4.0.3). You may have to wait a few more days.

    i realy started to hate samsung first it made as like a presoner by the emmc bug ..

    • Yes, the latest version for XSG is still 4.0.3. You have to wait. But the update should arrive earlier than the iPhone 5.

      • Hi. I have not received 4.0.4 update yet for my galaxy note. Currently it is running on ICS 4.0.3 version.

        • It seems this model is for Iraq. Anyway, the ICS 4.0.4 udpate fro LP7 is still not available. You probably will not get ICS 4.0.4 update. But it is possible, you will get the Jelly Bean update directly in the first quarter next year.

    • You should not use the ROM for other regions, for two reasons: 1). it may void your warranty; 2). some functions may not work, especially, mobile radio.

      Although there are a few tools to help you flash the rom, you should not use them unless you have to time to clean the mess you may create.

  • still update for 4.0.4 not available here in qatar or ksa , i have seriuos battery issues with the 4.0.3 , any idea how can i get the 4.0.4 update is there any other way rather than waiting

    • Samsung's internal memo points the date to August 31. The delay in some regions probably is caused by local carrier testing. As Samsung started Jelly Bean (android 4.1) on Galaxy Note already, all regions should receive the ICS 4.0.4 update before the JB update is release in Q4/2012-Q1/2013

      • Hi, my GN comes with open austria firmware. The last one is ICS 4.0.3 version while local carriers have already a 4.0.4. version... I don't understand, do you have any explanation ?

        • Yes, the latest version for ATO model (generic Austria) is still 4.0.3. While DRE (Three) and Max (T-Mobile) models already got ICS 4.0.4 update.

          The delay can be caused by local vendor. Anyway, it should be coming soon.

    • "by the end of August", as I know, is the target date for ICS 4.0.4 update for Galaxy Note. The delay can also be caused by local carrier, which participates and "approves" any update related to the 2G/3G radio.

      If you haven't got the update, you have to wait......

      • i will wait for 2 more days then i will go for cyanogen cuz my phone works as a heater now and Im starting to hate this phone

        • If you go to third-party roms, CyanogenMod is probably the best option. Anyway, you may just wait a while to see whether the 4.0.4 update is available or not.

    • The latest version is till ICS 4.0.3. ICS 4.0.4 is supposed to be available in all regions by 31 August. You may just wait two more days.

  • Hi. Currently am using android 4.0.3. Update has been released and i'm trying to upgrade my note to 4.0.4 but it keeps on saying failed to update firmware. Use kies(pc) etc. Tried with kies pc but didn't work. Any suggestion to solve this problem ? Been trying several times.. but it didn't work. Thanks !

    • First, make sure your Kies is the latest version. (help--check for updates).

      Then, you may try Tools–Firmware upgrade and initialization , or even Tools–Emergency firmware recovery.

      Of course, you can also try to reset your Note and try again (settings--back up and reset--factory data reset)

  • i have problem in GNote . my oS 4.0.3 and i want to upgrade 4.0.4 . after finish download 109Mb and then install. only trouble . can't upgrade , must be keis or visit samsung centre .

    • If the update failed, you may backup your data, and do a factory reset, then try again.

      Normally, Kies is more reliable (although Kies itself is not up to standard). If update through Kies failed, In Kies, you can manually try Tools--Firmware upgrade and initialization , or even Tools--Emergency firmware recovery.

      Please always update Kies on your PC first (Help--check for updates).

    note runned perfectly under 2.3.6
    now moved to 4.0.4, and 2 things run worse :
    Facebook crashes often, specially when trying to upload pics or vids ; and the videoconfs ( talk ) do not work any more
    some idea of what to do ?

    • Facebook app usually is buggy. You may try to clear the cache or re-install it.

      Gtalk still works well. Or are you talking about other apps?

        it is a pity that facebook works worse than before ; maybe they will correct ? otherwise we have to wait for Jelly bean I guess.
        videoconf worked yesterday when PC called the Galaxy note using the (old) peer-to-peer system ; it does not seem to work with the new "hangout" system...

        • sometimes, the facebook update even mess up itself. But it seems there are some improvements in last a few releases.

          The G+ hangout should work on your Note.

  • hi, i gonna reset my phone, its harm to phone or OS, i don't mind of data, every time im getting error unfortunately twlauncher stopped, it will be ok.............

    • Factory reset should not harm your phone: it just clear old settings and reload the original settings.

        • Yes, some personal data or settings will be removed. But downloaded files should still be there. Anyway, you should backup important data before resetting.

    • Samsung use TouchWiz for all of their Android phones, except Nexus, which always use vanilla UI to give users "Google" experience.

      Long history short, in the early days, Android UI is so ugly, all manufacturers (Samsung, Moto, HTC, LG, Sony...)try to give their phones sexy dresses. Now, such sexy dresses become funny and boring compared with the improved native UI. However, most manufacturers still continue to use their own UI to "differentiate" (does not necessarily means better ) their products from others. TouchWiz is just an example, a bad example.

      The good thing is that you can always install a new launcher to cover (you cannot disable unless you flash your phone with something else)the TouchWiz.

  • Hi. Im writing from the Philippines.

    I received an update to 4.0.4 via OTA for the last 3 weeks, been trying to update it and even thru kies but always saying "Failed to Update Firmware."
    In OTA, the firmware finished downloading and when it reboot, the green robot's blue meter only ends up at around 10% and will reboot again normally and a pop up will appear saying failed to update.
    Im so tired of this, and when i tried kies, when it finished downloading the firmware for almost an hour, and after my phone reboot, it stucked on the Green Robot logo, saying "Downloading.... Don't disconnect..." and its just there for an hour.

    • If it is from GB to ICS 4.0.4, it can take a few hours. If it is from ICS 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, it should take less than one hour.

      If update from Kies also fail, you may try to factory reset your phone, and try again through Kies. Please backup your data before resetting your phone.

      Please note, if you rooted your phone before, you probably need unroot it for the update.

      • I have already reset my phone to factory settings but still fails to update both on phone and on Kies PC. I do not know what you meet when you say root and unroot. Please help me.

        • If you rooted your phone, sometimes, the update cannot go through. If not, forget it.

          Back up your data to a safe location. Note the update from GB to ICS can take a few hours.

          Please first make sure the version of the Kies on your PC is: 2.3.2.12074.13 (Help--check for update). Then, connect your Galaxy Note to the PC with an USB cable. In Kies (on your PC), go to Tools--Firmware upgrade and initialization. Follow the instructions.

          If it still fails, you can try Tools--Emergency firmware recovery. Follow the instructions.

          If it fails again, you probably have to visit local Samsung service center. The guys there should be able to update it for you.

          • Did a hard reset on my phone then updated through OTA and failed. Then tried connecting to Kies via PC, took me more than an hour then finally, I AM ON 4.0.4!!!

  • Hi i am running GB 2.3.6 on my note N7000 now.....my kies i saying i have a firmware update available which is "PDA:LRK/PHONE:LRK/CSC:LP5(XEU)".....now i cant figure out if this is ICS 4.0.4 or 4.0.3....i really dont like the ics 4.0.3 update and i was hoping to go to ics 4.0.4 from GB so can u tell is this firmware version ics 4.0.4 or 4.0.3....

    • XEU is for UK model. So, the latest update should be ICS 4.0.4. Please update through Kies as the download can be quite large, and the update may take a few hours.

    • For UAE (csc code: XSG), the latest firmware is till 4.0.3. You have to wait a few more days to get the 4.0.4 update. The original target date of 4.0.4 update all regions as I know is by the end of August.

    • Only the Galaxy Note models for Orange in your country received the ICS 4.0.4 update. For all other models in Spain, the latest version is still 4.0.3. So you probably have to wait a few more days.

    Can users pls update if ths battery drain issue with the earlier ICS version has been resolved completely? I had downgraded to GB owing to severe battery drain on ICS.

    • The battery drain issue due to kernel and firmware bugs has been apparently solved in the ICS 4.0.4 update.

    • Maybe you have to wait a few more days. I don't think Samsung will miss the target date of August 31.

  • I was never happy with the ICS upgrade from Gingerbread but this ICS 4.04 has solved all my issues. My Note now works great, better than with Gingerbread and with a couple of cool new features.

  • Hi, I live in Indonesia. I tried to do the firmware update to 4.0.4 from the official 4.0.3 using OTA. I tried several times downloading using wifi and GSM. In all occasion, download was successful and the phone rebooted itself, but then it says "failed to update firmware and try using Kies".
    I tried connecting to Kies, but it never tell me that there is a new update available...

    Now I am stuck in 4.0.3 and really don't know what to do next to officially upgrade it to 4.0.4. Could you give me any advice?

    • You may reboot your phone first before connecting to PC (Kies).

      Also, if the Kies does not show update, you can first manual check for update for Kies (help--check for updates). Make sure the version of your Kies is (at the time of writing this post is 2.3.2.12074_13).

      Then connect your Note to the PC, and go to (in Kies) Tools--Firmware update and initialization. Kies will check the current firmware version for you.

  • Hi - I am using the UK Note and since it did the update to 4.0.4 my phone won't sync with KIES on my iMac - I ported my number over to t-Mobile when I had the phone back in June and have had no problems but have noticed that following this recent update, the phone number stored in the phone status is not my current number (and am assuming it is the original number that was issued with the phone) - I am therefore wondering if this is why the phone won't sync - my iMac doesn't even recognise that there is a phone connected and I can't upload my photo's through iPhoto which I was always able to do previously.... Has anyone else experienced this problem or is able to shed any light on this please? I'm not very technically minded!! Thanks

    • During the updating, some info may be reset. You need manually change it back.

      Kies is not good software; Kies on Mac is simple even worse.

      You may backup you original contents managed by Kies, then uninstall it, and install the latest version again.

  • Would like to know Indian user reviews on the Galaxy Note ICS 4.04 update. Am wondering whether i should opt for the update. Have heard some are having signal issues, constant self-rebooting issues, etc. Is this true? Guys, please post your reviews upon using this update. Would be obliged.

    • I didn't try Indian ROAM. But based on my personal experience with ICS 4.0.4 update, it is quite stable. Sometimes, the issues, for example, self-rebooting may be caused by some apps.

      • Thanks for your quick response GN, I don't think self-rebooting could be due to applications, because I had purchased a SII in Sept 2011, it came with 2.3.3 (INDIA), and after upgrading it to 2.3.6 in January 2012 I faced the self-rebooting problem at least 7-10 times a day - that too on a completely clean install with NO external applications installed on it. I also faced no signal or very, very poor signal issues, and poor or no wifi connectivity issues as well. The Service Centre was unable to help rectify the issue & ultimately I ended up purchasing the Note.

        So I am a little apprehensive since I read a few upgraders have posted that they are facing similar issues I faced after upgrading their Note to 4.04. My Note is still on GB 2.3.6 (DDLC1 - India) at present, and apart from facing a screen changing subtle hues of pink-blue-green issue visible on a white background (this problem too the service centre is unable to comprehend), the rest of it is working quite stably.

        So I am in a quandry - TO UPGRADE - OR NOT TO UPGRADE - THAT IS THE QUESTION!!!! Any advice or posting from yourself or any other upgraders would be most welcome and thanked.

    I received the 4.0.4 update via ota. The update downloads successfully, and however when I hit install after a few seconds it reboots the phone. It goes to the install screen & reboots again. I get a failed to update firmware message. My note is completely stock No rooting etc. What seems to be the problem? Pls help.

  • Hi when i done my update for 4.0.3 my 3g connection is very slow im happy my old one or till me what can i do .I need my 3g because this the only i have i dont have wifi at home. My internet is only my phone so please help me how to fix this.there's available update but i cant do it coz i lost my connection and i cant do to pc .thank u.

    • Very likely, it is caused by the mobile network settings, not the ICS itself.

      You cna go to Settings--More---Mobile networks. Make sure "Use packet data" is checked, and data roaming is NOT checked. Network mode should be GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode).

      If all settings are correct, the problem is then caused by your APN settings. You need check with your service provider on APN settings (usually they post the settings on their website, or you can call the service hotline), because different different carriers have different settings. (You may press Access Point names to review your settings.)

    • Update Kies first (help--Check for update), reboot your phone, then connect your phone to the PC.

      If you still want to update through OTA (not Kies), you can try to reboot your phone and try again.

        Called our local Samsung Helpdesk and they said to bring the unit to their service center...sigh...

        • It is probably caused by some caches. So, it is better to let the service center guys cleanup and manually update it for you.

          • Maybe her GN belongs to a region that has 4.0.3 as the latest update. We have the same issue and I'm still waiting for Baltic region to update to 4.0.4 :)

  • Wish I never updated..it took some features like crackle movies and zoom in. Unless you're having issues, leave it like it came.

  • My galaxy note notified me about the 4.04 update today. After 25 % completion i cancelled it.... Now when i recheck for the update .....it says no updates .....what should i do???

  • every times am getting an error box saying `unfortunately twlauncher stopped`and a black screen phone is unresponsive after 15 or 20 seconds to show the home screen after pressing the back key.please advice how to resolve this problem

    • This is normal, if the UI (Touch Wiz) is crashed, the system will restart the UI automatically. This will take 10-20 secs on Galaxy Note. SO, you have to wait about 30 secs to get all functions back.

  • After updating ics 4.0.4. i have been facing a problem.When i change my sim card and start the phone.Gps and wifi started automatically.when i closing the wifi this is not closed after few second it will start automatically.please help.

    • If you manually disable WiFi, it should not start automatically. But if it is turned off because of entering sleep mode, when you awake your phone, it will try to connect to available WiFi automatically.

      For GPS, several apps (e.g., navigation)can start it automatically. You can go to settings--location services, disable GPS satellites. Then if GPS is disabled, it will not start automatically, and the app that require it will ask you to start it manually.

      • When i closed the gps it closed but wifi is not closing.when i closed the wifi manually it start again and again

        • That is weird, because once WiFi radio is turned off, no apps can turn it on automatically.

          You may try to do a factory reset to see whether it helps. Please back up all your data before resetting your Note. (settings--back up and reset).

          Or, if it is convenient, you may visit local Samsung service center for a fix.

    I'm from Philippines and I recently updated my GN to ICS 4.0.3. I tried to update it again via OTA with a total update size of 86MB. During installation, it suddenly rebooted and prompt me that it fails to update to ICS 4.0.4. I tried to update it a lot of times and it resulted to the same failure.

    Kies, however is not working in my PC for such a reason that I don't know.

    Now, is there anyone here who can give me some advice or perhaps a decent explanation on why this update always result to failure?

    • You may try to reset your phone, then update again. Please back up your date before resetting your Note. (Settings--Backup and reset). The failure can be cause by some caches or leftovers of previous updating attempts.

      If Kies does not work, you may try to re-install it.

        I did reset GN (Backed it up first through Kies). I tried to update it to 4.0.4 but it states that there is no update available.

        Is it true that the 4.0.4 update is not yet available in the Philippines?

        • ICS 4.0.4 update for Galaxy Note is available for the the Philippines. You need make sure your phone is for Philippine market.

          You may try to update through Kies on your PC as OTA is not reliable in some countries.

          • Now I figured it out.. My GN was under Baltic states..

            Now, do you have any intel about its release date in Baltic states?

            This time Kies finally works. I also reset my GN. But still the 4.0.4 update is not available. Kies recognize the 4.0.3 is latest update for my phone.

            Now, I just want to know how to determine the region that correspond to my GN. And also, if you have an updated list of countries or region that still stuck into the 4.0.3 update.

    • Just wait a few days. Samsung's target is by the end of this month. You should get this 4.0.4 update soon.

    • This is not a major update, so you don't need preparations. Of course, backing up your datat before updating is always a good practice.

    • Sadly, I think its "normal". for some unknown reasons, Samsung decided that some countries get pop up while others don`t. Mine is Hongkong 4.04 version and i don`t get the pop up. I read somewhere that sweden (or switzerland) users don`t get pop up as well...
      so much for the so called international version ><

    • Normally, update will fix some bugs, and of course may introduce a few new ones. Otherwise, software engineers will has nothing to do.

      Eventually, it is up to you. There are no perfect or bug free firmware.

      • I've updated my Note to 4.0.4 but i can't find Pop up Play button in Video Player. Could the firmware that i've installed have no feature about pop up play?

        • Did you try to use the in-stock video player? Other players may not have this pop-up play feature.

Dont know why but i'm registered to France with my CSC so i read some forums in french (dont know anything about they talk there) and somewhere i find wrote that: absense du pop up play.     • Sorry to know you disappointment with ICS on GN. Most people like the ICS, although there are a few problems. No perfect software update, given the lifespan of a phone is only 2-3 years.

      Please note, this site is a Galaxy Note user community (users help users), and has nothing to do with Samsung. We, just like you, are ordinary Galaxy Note Users.

    • Did you check through Kies from your PC? ICS 4.0.4 for both DBT (open German) and DTM (T-Mobile) should be available.

      Actually a few players in Play store can do this for quite long time. The update adds this feature to the stock video player (not for third party players)

  • Hello. I've found out that "No data connection" and "No or unknown signal" stop counting when i have data plan activated.
    Also i forgot to mention in my first post here: i have all bars in signal in 2G/3G mode, those 2 things are shown in BBS.
    My SIM was used in my ex 2 phones : iPhone 4 and 4S without any problems and the adapter i got from my carrier store.
    At the moment i read something about CSC and the eligibility to get a future update. I dialed *#272*IMEI# and a pops up a screen with following information:

    Preconfig
    Sales Code XEF

    At the bottom of the page i get 2 options:
    Install and Cancel. What should i do?

    • Do NOT do anything about the CSC code! Changing it may wipe your data and settings.

      XEF is for France. ICS 4.0.4 update should be coming soon.

      • Hello again. Like i said in that screen with CSC code, at the bottom appears 2 option: install and cancel. What if right now i dont have a csc code on my note. Are you sure i am not allowed to install it? I mean if it were already installed i should have 2 options: uninstall and cancel. Dont know. Waiting for a reply. Thanks.

        • You must have one. If not, Kies cannot recognize your phone. This CSC code must match the firmware as well.

          There is no uninstall option. Install or cancel, just choose cancel if you do not want to mess up your phone. Changing CSC code will wipe your personal settings and data (like factory reset).

          • Ok then. I'll leave it like it is and wait for ICS 4.0.4 releasing in France. But i still have no clue how my Note have CSC for France since it was purchase without contract from Romania. The only thing i can imagine is that the store from where i purchased the Note get suppies from France. Thanks again.

    • A good adapter should not cause problems. Anyway, you may try a normal SIM card, instead of the micro sim.

    • You'd better backup your data and perform a factory reset (settings--backup and reset--factory data reset).

      If this does not help, it is very likely a hardware issue, and you need visit Samsung service center to get a replacement.

  • Well were to start, version 4.0.4. The graghic did improved. I think my phone choque on it.
    It so bad now and i meen really bad. Never haves any problem for months and then that update arrived.
    LTE to 4G go crazy , text curser jump every where, stuck with new used less application tbat consume battery life like crazy. Need to restart often.
    Erased all my bookmark, changed phone rang.
    Need to recharged midday and night ( no games ash video). And more
    I.m just very unhappy.

    • If you update from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, all your settings should be untouched.

      It seems you are in North American, because the international version does not have LTE. So, your update was from GB to ICS, and therefore a lot of settings got lost.

      If the problem is so serious, you can easily ask for a replacement. As long as you are using the official firmware, Samsung should repair or replace within the warranty period.

      • You're right I'm Canada. I did contact my cell phone provider.
        Next week I should in contact from programming source system they need to know the problem.
        So far all option, application, back ground fiction haved been turn off or uninstall.

    • Samsung's target date is by the end of August. But I guess it should be available within one or two weeks.
